A Message from Our Club President

As I write this on March 25th, we are finally starting to hit some temperatures above zero during the day. Although the snow banks are still high, I can see the substantial melt over the last week on my back deck. It is hard to believe that we might be golfing in a little more than 5 weeks. It is my understanding that Cedarhill has always been open on or before May 1st. Last week the people in the weather know said that we are in for 6 more weeks of winter. Let’s hope the Cedarhill golfing vibes break that forecast!

Let me introduce you to the members of your 2008 Executive Committee: Sandy Farrell, Past President; Keelan Green, Vice-President and Recording Secretary; Deanie Nugent; Roger Stanion; Faye Linseman; and, Kyle Murray. I would also like to thank Scott Brewster for his many years on the Executive Committee. Scott will be taking over as Chair of our new Handicap and Trophy Committee.

The role of the Executive Committee is to represent the members’ needs to management. Please speak to any of us if you have any questions or concerns. In the next newsletter I will outline some of the activities the Executive is hoping to accomplish this year.

We hope to make all chairs and committees more visible to the members. All committees will be having their picture taken and the pictures will be posted on the website. We can’t all be known to everyone so hopefully this will help you seek us out if you have any questions.

Happy Spring!!

Lee Whelly

DUES

The final instalment for 2008 dues was payable on March 10th and any unpaid amounts are now accumulating interest charges. Please ensure any unpaid amounts are cleared up prior to opening in order to avoid embarrassment at the 1st tee.

PLAYING COMMITTEE (Bill Gosewitz, Club Captain)

There’s no business like snow business. Regardless of the blanket of white outside, we are approaching a new season and I promise you the snow will be replaced by a green blanket of grass . . . at some point.

We have posted the first two tournaments of the year in the club house and locker rooms.

Get Acquainted – May 3rd – breakfast in the clubhouse at 8:30 AM – sun, rain, snow, sleet – will not stop us from having fun – this will be followed by golf (weather permitting). Come out meet old friends and make new ones. Can’t sign up at the club - send us an email to playingcommittee@rogers.com. Please ensure you get a response. The cost for this event is $15.00 and will include breakfast and an opportunity to win the ‘GOLD TOUQUE AWARD”. Come out and have fun.

Mixed Chapman Scramble – May 10th – each team has two members of the opposite sex (that would mean a male and a female). Each player tees off on every hole and then hits their partner’s ball for the second shot. After each player has hit 2 shots on a hole, the team picks the better shot and both players hit from that location, and again select the better shot until the ball is holed out.

  • The team handicap will be 25% of the two players’ handicaps.
  • Optional entry fee for prize pool $20/ couple – towards prizes and closest to the pin.
  • Come out have fun – meet your fellow members.
  • Men play from white tees / Ladies from red tees.
  • Once again, for this event the opportunity will exist to register at playingcommittee@rogers.com.

The playing committee looks forward to helping you have competitive fun this year – don’t be afraid to come out even if you aren’t used to competitive golf. These two events allow you to meet people and mingle.

GREENS COMMITTEE (Ross White, Chair)

Members of the committee at the present time are:

  • Ross White, Chair
  • Martin Wells, Past Chair
  • Michi Small, Ladies Representative
  • Kyle Murray, Executive Committee Representative
  • Bob Williamson, General Manager
  • Chuck Garland, Course Superintendent

The committee meets once a month during the playing season or when necessary. Some of the items dealt with last year were; reviewing and recommending items on the short term and long term “Project List”, course maintenance scheduling and input from members on improvements that would enhance play.

Examples of items discussed are:

  • Pin placements (related to reasonable placement on the playable area of the green)
  • Division of the green into sectors for pin rotation on a program basis
  • Pin flag colours (to indicate location on the green)
  • Green speed
  • Tee block positioning and location rotation
  • Signage in general and cart signage in particular
  • Improved cutting of the rough around #9 green to improve speed of play

The foregoing is just a partial list to help you understand what the committee deals with as your liaison with management and the Course Superintendent. It should be noted that major changes to the course will take place as part of the “Long Term” budget built into the redevelopment of the entire course and that other changes to improve present playing conditions are handled within the “Short Term” budget. I can assure you that items brought to our attention will be discussed at our committee meetings. We will also inform the members of planned changes, maintenance schedules and any decisions that will affect normal playing conditions.

It should be recognized that this committee was developed through the co-operation of people from management (Bob Williamson & Chuck Garland) and your committee members with the memberships input. I would like to thank Joanne Gosewitz for all of her input (she is leaving this committee & will be missed) and Martin Wells, who put a lot of time into making the committee work successfully. Martin will remain a member as the “Past Chair”.

You can contact us for information or with any concern that you have. Contact one of your member representatives or “e-mail” me at whitel@295.ca. Phone 613-825-1718.

Looking forward to another great, fun filled year of golf at Cedarhill.

MEN’S NIGHT COMMITTEE (Steve Bright, Chair)

No doubt most of you are like me and are wondering when winter will finally end and are anxiously awaiting the start of another golf season and getting back into the swing of our weekly Thursday evening Cedarhill men’s nights.

For new members or anyone not familiar with our men’s night, I would encourage you to come out any Thursday and check it out as it has long been considered one of the best men’s nights in the area. Briefly, members of men’s night are formed into 4 man teams with each week, everyone coming out accumulating points for their team towards our season ending banquet where everyone enjoys a complementary meal and receives a prize. Each week, the majority of players stay in the lounge after their rounds to enjoy the weekly dinner specials, hopefully win a prize in the draw or just to socialize with the other members. All members of the club are welcome to join either as a team or individually.

The season will start with an opening social evening on April 17th starting around 6:30 PM which is an opportunity for everyone to come out and sign up, reacquaint themselves with fellow golfers and see some of the changes that have been made at the club. After that, with cooperation from the weather, April 24th will be our first non-scoring playing night with scoring starting the following Thursday, May 1rst.

Hope to see you all at the club in the near future.

DAY LADIES COMMITTEE (Robbie Dempster, Chair)

As your new chair, I wish to welcome everyone to a new golf season. Looking out my window right now, I find it hard to believe that it will ever come with the mounds of snow on our front lawn. Let’s hope the weather co-operates so we can get the clubs out and begin to enjoy the game again.

Our committee this year is as follows:

  • Chair: Liz White
  • Past Chair: Robbie Dempster
  • Treasurer: Christine Hubbard
  • Team golf: Michi Small
  • Tombstone: Dorothy Price
  • Weekly draws & Pro-shop draws: Deanie Nugent

Our opening day is Tuesday, May 6th at 8:30 a.m. with a short meeting followed by golf, weather permitting.

The fees remained at $30.00 for a number of years and an increase to $35.00 will be necessary to cover our expenses. I welcome input from all our members and hope we all have a wonderful time. I wish to thank Robbie for all her time and effort chairing our program for the last number of years. Well done.

Welcome to new members of Cedarhill and I hope to see you all at our Ladies’ Day opening meeting. Looking forward to a fun year of golf.

LADIES’ NIGHT COMMITTEE (Laura MacHutchon, Chair)

A new season is upon us and it's time to start thinking golf! For those of you who are new to the Tuesday Ladies Night League, my name is Laura MacHutchon, and I will be the Ladies Night Committee Chair for 2008.

Please let me know if you are interested in joining our group.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE (Mike Latimer, Chair)

Hello all and welcome to the 2008 season. Anybody tired of the snow yet ???. Keep positive - it will go away soon.

The Social Committee has been busy getting ready for the Opening Social and Casino Night to be held on April 18th. The program will be the best one ever. Tom Jones (aka Lou Nelson) will be headlining the event again this year. He was our featured entertainer a couple of years ago and was just spectacular as he sang and mingled with the crowd. Joining Tom this year will be our resident favourite “The Rainman”, and magician / comedian Elliot Smith. You won’t want to miss this event. Make sure to register and pay by April 1st in order to receive an extra $250,000 in casino dollars.

Not far behind is the Polar Bear Open on May 2nd. This TGIF Nine & Dine is the first of many to be run over the 2008 season. These events were regular sell-outs so make sure to watch for the sign-up sheets when they get posted in the lounge.

Joining the 2008 Social Committee are Tom West and Mel Schafer. We always need members to help us run these events. Please let us know if you could spare a couple of hours to help us organize, set-up end execute these events for your fellow members. As always, please feel free to give us some suggestions and feedback as to what you would like to see happen at Cedarhill. Believe when I say that when we do get together as a group of members, we always have a great time.

I can always be reached via e-mail at mlat@sympatico.ca .
